Frisian Youth Orchestra

Frisian Youth Orchestra
The Frisian Youth Orchestra, founded in 1977, is made up of a group of enthusiastic young amateur musicians. The orchestra has a symphonic line-up of about sixty members. The Frisian Youth Orchestra is guided by four core values: Enjoyment, Cooperation, Discipline, and Development. Our goal is to offer young musicians from Friesland a stage where they can experience the joy of making music together in a symphonic orchestra. At the same time, the Frisian Youth Orchestra aims to inspire each individual member to grow and enjoy the process.

The orchestra regularly performs in Friesland and other parts of the Netherlands. In addition, it has gone on 16 tours to the United States, Spain, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Switzerland, Sweden, Italy, France, Croatia, and Slovenia. Alongside its symphonic repertoire, film music and musical theatre works are also frequently part of the program.

In 2006, the Frisian Youth Orchestra won the grand prize at the first National Competition for Youth Symphony Orchestras. In 2015, it won first prize in the category “Large Youth Symphony Orchestra.” The orchestra also performed Carl Wittrock’s Van Oranje for the royal couple at the closing ceremony of the bicentennial of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Theater Carré, Amsterdam. The orchestra earned this honor by submitting the best performance and recording of the piece in a nationwide YouTube competition. In 2015, the Frisian Youth Orchestra received the Frisian Anjer award, presented by the King’s Commissioner John Jorritsma. The Frisian Anjer is awarded annually by the Cultuurfonds Fryslân to a person, association, or institution that has made an outstanding contribution to Frisian culture. In 2017, the Frisian Youth Orchestra celebrated its 40th anniversary with a festive Jubilee Concert in the main hall of Stadsschouwburg De Harmonie in Leeuwarden, preceded earlier that day by a reunion of former members. In 2024, the orchestra undertook its most recent tour, this time to Croatia and Slovenia.

Since 2015, the Frisian Youth Orchestra has organized the Cool Classic Concert Tour: a series of “play-along” days throughout the province of Friesland. A team of music teachers first visits primary schools in the region. Children who play a symphonic instrument or the recorder are invited to rehearse with the Frisian Youth Orchestra during these play-along days. At the end of the rehearsal day, they perform a joint concert in a real theatre. On the same day, there is also a music fair where children can try out instruments and meet music teachers.

The Frisian Youth Orchestra aims to perform at least 10 concerts each year. Check the agenda for upcoming performances.
